Chaplain blasts shipowners for 'floating coffins' HALIFAX (CP) A waterfront chaplain has slammed greedy shipowners and port officials who he says allow sailors like the 36 who died on the Marika7 to perish in "floating coffins." "Shipowners play games," Missions to Seamen chaplain David Craig told a Saturday night memorial service for the crew of the sunken ore freighter. are good operators.

But (some) miserable undesirables have no regard for human life, have no conscience when their rust-bucket floating coffins disappear with the tragic loss of life." About 16 people attended the hour-long service at the Mission chapel on waterfront. The Marika 7 and its crew, 30 Filipinos and six Greeks, were lost in a storm 1,500 kilometres east of Newfoundand on New Year's Day. The vessel had been carrying ore from Quebec to the Netherlands. Craig said a dangerous profession is frequently made worse when unscrupulous shipowners ignore marine safety standards and port authorities turn a blind eye. The chaplain didn't directly accuse the owners of the Liberian-registered bulk carrier of operating an unseaworthy vessel.

But the feisty chaplain did say authorities should take steps to improve safety for vessels crossing the stormy North Atlantic.
