Pregame Preview: Padres go for sweep minus injured Headley (2024)

PITTSBURGH, Pa.PITTSBURGH, Pa.—The Padres have lost Chase Headley for an undetermined amount of time with a fractured little finger on his left hand.

Headley suffered the injury Saturday night sliding into second on a first-inning steal. He stayed in the game, but the finger grew more painful during the night and X-rays and a CT scan showed a non-displaced fracture.

The finger had also possibly dislocated.

“We’ll see how it plays out the next couple of days,” said Padres manager Bud Black.

Headley was waiting for doctors to review the X-rays before talking about what’s next.

“If I can play, I’ll play,” said the third baseman. “It doesn’t feel bad right now. You never know about these things.”

Black said the Padres aren’t planning to immediately add a player until the severity of Headley’s injury is determined. Right now, both Logan Forsythe and Alberto Gonzalez can play third and Jesus Guzman has played third in the past although his defense is not the best.

Forsythe starts at third Sunday with Cameron Maybin moving into Headley’s No. 3 slot in the order and Will Venable leading off.

Headley is hitting .292 with four homers, 43 RBI and a .380 on-base percentage. He was 3-for-9 during the first two games in Pittsburgh with a grand slam homer, six RBI and three runs scored as the Padres set a franchise record for the most runs in back-to-back games (28) while the Pirates were suffering back-to-back, double-digit losses at home for the first time since 1887.

The Padres go for a series sweep Sunday against a Pirates team that has suffered nine straight losses to go from five games above .500 to four games below. They will be facing former teammate Kevin Correia.
