This #LaborDay, I want to share this new investigation from the Washington Post highlighting one of the continued indignities of an exception to the minimum wage that exclusively targets people with significant disabilities. When the Fair Labor Standards Act was passed, section 14(c) allowed employers to apply for and hold a special certificate to pay individuals with disabilities a fraction of the minimum wage based on their productivity. At the time, it was a way to ensure injured veterans could remain employed and provided a “deal” on their labor and the dignity of work.Nearly a century later, and with decades of experience challenging norms, we know better. Today, the policy perpetuates the notion that people with disabilities are worth less than their nondisabled counterparts and, as the investigation showed along with many other resources over the past several years, it is a system ripe for abuse and exploitation. This Labor Day, please join me in my call to end the payment of subminimum wages under Section 14(c) and support the Transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment Act.And as you read today’s posts and the appreciation for the workers of this country, please keep in mind a few fundamental truths:👩🏼🏫 Every job requires and teaches important and necessary skills. 👷♀️ There is no such thing as unskilled or low-skilled labor, and considering it such not only denigrates the work, but the worker’s experience and growth potential for the next job.💵 Every person is worth being compensated fairly, for however many hours someone may work.🎉 And every person is worth celebrating for their work, in every position they hold, and for all they bring to the world.Have a meaningful Labor Day!https://lnkd.in/eprw6rNR

Yesterday, I had the distinct honor to attend the American Association of People with Disabilities celebration event for the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The highlight for me was hearing from activists who took part in the historic Capitol Crawl in March of 1990, demanding passage of the ADA, which would go on to be signed into law on July 26, 1990. The Capitol Crawl showed, quite literally, the indignities people with disabilities face in a world not built for them. Activists abandoned their wheelchairs, crutches, and other mobility devices and pulled themselves up, step by step, for 83 steps. Listening to them recount the day, and their sit-in on the Capitol rotunda, fed my little political-nerd soul. If you don’t know the story, you must go look it up. They changed the course of history and made it impossible to ignore their demands. Happy ADA Anniversary!

We enjoyed celebrating the anniversary of the #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct with Congressman Hoyer yesterday! We are so blessed to be represented by such a long standing champion of disability rights and to have a six-decade long relationship with the Congressman. My favorite part of the day was how we got to show Mr. Hoyer exactly how our team operates, moving quickly to solve problems in support of our federal customers…. Because when we got on the elevator, it got stuck! 🫨🫣 Fortunately, the Melwood Operations team got us out in no time and we all got a great story about that time we were stuck in an elevator with a member of Congress and Melwood came to the rescue!Happy #ADA34 Anniversary!

💯Agree! Proud to be part of an incredible network of organizations like Peckham, Inc. that help tens of thousands of people find meaningful work across the country in mission-critical roles for the federal government, including the U.S. Army. The AbilityOne Program is a lynchpin of our nation’s efforts to ensure people who are blind or have significant disabilities, who face the most substantial barriers to employment, have the opportunity to start, build, and grow their careers. At Melwood, we recognize the power and influence that the federal government has in driving change and supporting the American workforce. We are grateful to all the federal agencies from DoD to GSA to NASA and more who recognize the value of the AbilityOne Program and the incredible work of people with disabilities in advancing their mission.

#ICYMI Larysa K. joined America's Workforce Union Podcast to discuss the critical intersection of employee rights and disability rights. This was a great interview and a glimpse into the work Melwood does to support our workforce, with and without disabilities.
